Fledglings- Toddler Room

2 Years +

A warm and purposeful environment for children aged 2+, where curiosity is encouraged, independence is nurtured and young learners begin to spread their wings.

WHERE SKILLS AND CONFIDENCE TAKE FLIGHT

The Fledglings room has been thoughtfully designed to inspire independence, curiosity and growing confidence, supporting children as they take important steps towards school readiness.

Our environment builds on the secure foundations established in our younger room, providing purposeful opportunities for children to develop communication, problem-solving, early literacy and self-care skills. Through carefully planned play, structured routines and collaborative experiences, children are encouraged to think independently, make choices and take pride in their achievements.

INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT AND GROWING INDEPENDENCE:

We recognise that every child develops at their own pace. In our Fledglings room, a consistent daily routine provides structure, security and clear expectations, helping children feel confident as they begin to take greater ownership of their day.

Our environment gently encourages children to become more independent, while still offering the reassurance and guidance they need. Predictable routines, shared experiences and supportive adults help children feel capable, valued and ready to take on new challenges.

• Children follow a consistent daily rhythm, including structured group times, stories and singing;
• Rolling snack encourages independence, choice-making and social interaction;
• Children sit together for meals, developing conversation skills and a strong sense of community;
• Independence is encouraged in self-care routines such as toileting, handwashing and putting on coats;
• Calm spaces are available to support emotional regulation and reflection;
• Practitioners guide children in turn-taking, sharing and following simple expectations within the room.

Learning and Development:

Learning in our Fledglings room becomes increasingly purposeful as children grow in confidence and capability. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in a way that is engaging, carefully planned and responsive to each child’s stage of development.

Our experienced practitioners thoughtfully design experiences that build the foundations for future learning, while keeping play at the heart of everything we do.

Children’s development is supported through:

• Structured group times to strengthen listening, attention and early language skills;
• Rich storytelling, singing and conversation to extend vocabulary and comprehension;
• Early mark-making opportunities that lay the foundations for writing;
• Play-based phonological awareness through rhyme, rhythm and sound exploration;
• Carefully planned activities that promote problem-solving, curiosity and critical thinking;
• Skilled observation and responsive planning to ensure every child’s next steps are nurtured and extended.

Here, children develop the confidence, resilience and core skills that prepare them for the transition to school — while still experiencing the joy and wonder of early childhood.

Outdoor Experiences and Nursery Life:

We believe that time spent outdoors is an essential part of children’s development. In our Fledglings room, children benefit from free-flow access to the outdoor environment, allowing them to extend their learning, test their ideas and develop physical confidence throughout the day.

Our outdoor provision is carefully designed to promote independence, resilience and real-life learning experiences.

Children benefit from:

• Free-flow access between indoors and outdoors, encouraging autonomy and choice;
• Opportunities to develop strength, balance and coordination through bikes, climbing equipment and large-scale physical play;
• Open-ended loose parts that inspire creativity, problem-solving and collaboration;
• A mud kitchen and gardening experiences that connect children with nature and seasonal change;
• Local walks within the community, helping children build awareness of their environment and sense of belonging;
• Encouragement to manage risk safely, including putting on waterproofs and wellies independently and assessing simple physical challenges;
• Meaningful nursery experiences, including shared events, mixed-age opportunities and community connections.

Through rich outdoor play and real-life experiences, children develop confidence, resilience and a strong sense of independence — preparing them not just for school, but for life.
